Use Case

There are circumstances in which the PLT4M technology cannot be fully integrated into the class/weight room. In this article, we’ve outlined some of those potential situations, and provide a guided approach for using PLT4M as a “digital textbook,” serving as your lesson plan.  This includes accessing the specific materials that would make up the “Teacher’s Guide” to prepare and execute full lessons away from technology, then tracking data after-the-fact.

Possible Reasons/Situations

  • Running class outside, or away from available technology (wifi, projector, devices, etc)

  • Desire to keep technology outside of classroom/gym-time (removing devices from students in class)

  • Tech Issues (wifi failing, projector broken, etc)

Step 1: Pre-Class Prep

Options:

  • Full Lesson Review
  • Quick Lesson Preview

Option 1: “Full Lesson Review”

Review in-depth written lesson plan, watch complete lesson in action, run by a PLT4M coach, and prepare to run the session on your own, start to finish.

Access Lesson Materials (via computer):

  1. Navigate to the Full Lesson plans found in the Resources tab. Use the category filter to find the right program/lesson. In this example, we’re preparing to teach a FIT101 lesson.

  1. Locate the particular lesson you are preparing to teach. Click on the lesson title to gain access to both the video lesson as well as the written lesson plan.

  1. Review Lesson Plan & Video

Video Lessons: These will provide you with a visual for how we teach the movements and concepts in the lesson.

Written Lesson Plans: This will provide you with a full step by step guide on how to execute this lesson, including how much time to allot for each section as well as coaching/talking points.

**The lesson materials can also be accessed on a phone; see below.

Access Lesson Materials (via App on mobile phone or tablet)

  1. Open the PLT4M App on your device. From the home screen, select “More” and then select Exercises.
  2. Using the filter icon in the upper right hand corner, select the program you’d like to prepare for. Click Submit.

  1. Locate the particular lesson you are preparing to teach. Click on the lesson title to gain access to both the video lesson as well as the written lesson plan.
  2. Review Lesson Plan & Video.

Video Lessons: These will provide you with a visual for how we teach the movements and concepts in the lesson.

Written Lesson Plans: This will provide you with a full step by step guide on how to execute this lesson, including how much time to allot for each section as well as coaching/talking points.

Option 2: “Quick Lesson Preview”

See the lesson laid out the way students would see it if assigned via their account, review the lesson, or desired sections of lesson, and lead the entire class in-person as desired.

Preview Student Lesson View (via computer):

  1. Navigate to Preview Mode for the lesson of the day.

  1. Review Lesson Notes & Videos

Videos: Use the videos to review proper movement execution.

Intro: Let the introduction video, and subsequent videos, serve as your talk track.

Notes: Let the notes serve as your coaching points, to reinforce movement technique. Example lesson notes:

Preview Student Lesson View (via App on Phone or Tablet):

  1.  Navigate to Preview Mode for the lesson of the day.
  2.  Review Lesson Notes & Videos

Step 2: In-Class Execution

Now that you’ve prepared for the lesson, it’s time to do what you do best—teach it!

There is no wrong way to do this. What’s important is that your students have been provided with direction, proper movement mechanics, and are getting active!

Here are some suggestions for executing a PLT4M lesson without the presence of technology in-class:

→ Attendance: decide how you plan to take attendance.

Options:

  • Make note by hand & enter in PLT4M later
  • Enter in real time via personal device

To Mark Attendance via Computer:

  1. From your Home screen, select “Take Attendance” under Shortcuts.
  1. Use the filter to select the group that you are taking attendance for. Manually log attendance by selecting the corresponding checkboxes.

To Mark Attendance via App on Phone or Tablet:

  1. Open your PLT4M App, and select the Attendance Tab.
  2. Use the filters along the top to select which group(s) you’d like to take attendance for.
  3. Tab over to the “Not Present” column, and manually log attendance by selecting the checkboxes.

→ Have your resources on hand, “just in case!”

Options:

  • Print Lesson + Coaching Points (from students view)
  • Print Full Lesson Plan
  • Access preview mode (digitally) for in-the-moment review of small details

Option 1: To Print Lesson + Coaching Points:

This is the students view, with no additional “talk tracks” included.

  1. Navigate to the Preview Mode for the lesson of the day.

  1. Select the “Print View” and then locate the section you want to print. Select Print—this will print one section at a time.

Option 2: To Print the Full Lesson Plan:

This lesson plan is curated for educators, with “talk tracks” included

  1. Navigate to the Full Lesson plans found in the Resources tab. Use the category filter to find the right program/lesson.

  1. Copy and Past the lesson into a word document that you can print from.

Option 3: To Access Lesson Digitally for in-the-moment Review:

  1. Refer to Step 1, Option 2 “Quick Lesson Preview” (above) to view digitally on App or Web, rather than print.

→ Data Tracking: Plan ahead for how you will collect data in class

Options:

  • Bring along paper/pens for students to record times/scores/etc, or for you to do so, so that you can record the data after

  • Bring phone/tablet/computer to record results in real time

  • Have plan for kids to enter on their own after

Step 3: Post Class Data-Entry & Tracking

Options:

  • Real time, teacher collected data
  • Student-driven, post class entry
  • Combine the two

Option 1: “Real-Time, Teacher Collected Data”

Bring some sort of personal technology with you, for entry of all relevant data as class happens, for tracking and review later on.

To enter results by computer:

  1. From your Home screen, select Log Test Results under Shortcuts.

  1. Select the category of tests you are looking to enter data for. For example the “Fitness” category includes testing found in the FIT101 program.  If you don’t see the Tests you are looking to enter in any of these categories, you can create a new test category.

  1. Once you have created or selected your Test category, use the group filter to sort for the group you are entering data for. You should now see the data fields you are looking to record, for the group you are entering data for.

To enter results by App (via phone or tablet):

  1. Open your PLT4M app, and select “More”
  2. Select the Testing button.
  3. Use the filters at the top to input the test you’re looking to record.
  1. Use the filters at the top to select the group(s) you’re looking to enter data for.
  2. Tap on a students name, use the number pad to record the result, click Submit.

Option 2: “Student-Driven, Post-Class Entry”

Require students to remember (or write down) relevant information throughout class, instruct them to enter via their own technology once session is complete.

In this scenario, you are not asking your students to log an entire workout, but rather, you are asking them to log only the results for any testing that took place during class.

How to enter individual results, by student via Computer:

  1. Students navigate to their Analytics tab.
  2. Students may need to customize their Performance dashboard by clicking Add New, and selecting the tests they are interested in tracking.

  1. Once students have added the appropriate tests to their dashboard, they can either click on the name of the Test, or they can select Log Test Result, both will bring them to the below screen where they can record a result, and slick Save.

How to enter individual results, by student via App (on phone or tablet):

  1. Students open their App and navigate to the Analytics tab.
  2. Students may need to customize their Analytics dashboard by tapping Edit, and selecting the tests they are interested in tracking.

  1. Once the dashboard is configured, students can tap the name of the test, and select Log New.
  2. Students will use the number pad to record a new result, and click Submit.

Option 3: “Combine the Two”

Require students to record (paper, whiteboard, etc) all relevant information throughout class, then enter all data yourself once class has ended.

Here is an example of a whiteboard used in the classroom. Students are instructed to jot down their scores for the day. The teacher can then reference the whiteboard when entering scores into PLT4M after the class. See Option 1 for data entry instructions.
